The Natural Trim Training Programme

Safe and Humane Hoof Care

The Natural Trim is guided by four principles developed from the Wild Horse Model and the natural forces that have shaped the equine hoof through millions of years of adaptation. They provide an ethical and practical foundation for every trimming decision, with two fundamental ideas at their core:

"Cause no harm," and

"Respect healing powers of nature."

Rather than treating the hoof as something that needs to be mechanically reshaped, the Guiding Principles direct the practitioner to respect its anatomical structures, recognise the difference between natural growth and natural wear, and exercise restraint where structures need the opportunity to recover. They provide a consistent reference point for working with the hoof as nature intended, while keeping the welfare of the horse at the centre of the trim.

FOUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF THE

Natural Trim

The Natural Trim is a humane, non-invasive method based on the natural wear patterns documented in the U.S. Great Basin wild horse hooves. These patterns form a defined set of trimming guidelines, using the naturally shaped hoof as the anatomical and functional reference.

Rather than forcing the hoof into a predetermined shape, the Natural Trim works alongside recreating more natural habitat and lifestyle to support the processes through which healthy, functional hooves develop.

Leave that which naturally should be there.

The frog, bars, sole and hoof wall are functional structures with a purpose. Natural Trim respects and preserves what naturally belongs in the hoof rather than routinely removing healthy structures.

Remove that which is naturally worn away in the wild.

Natural Trim mimics the wear patterns documented in wild horse hooves. Only growth that would naturally be worn away is removed, providing a clear boundary between necessary trimming and excessive removal.

Allow to grow that which should be there naturally but isn’t due to human meddling.

Where natural hoof structures have been compromised or over-trimmed, restraint is required. Natural Trim allows these structures the opportunity to grow and recover.

Ignore all pathology.

Pathology doesn't dictate the trim or override the first three Guiding Principles.

Pathology is a symptom of an underlying problem. By addressing its root rather than symptoms, healthier hoof growth can emerge and the pathology resolve naturally.

What Our Students Say

“ISNHCP completely changed the way I look at hoof care. The training helped me understand that the hoof cannot be considered in isolation from the whole horse, its environment, movement and diet. There is so much more to it than learning how to trim.”

“The knowledge and support I have received through ISNHCP has given me so much more confidence in my work with horses. I now understand not only what I am seeing in the hoof, but why it is happening and what needs to change to support the horse as a whole.”

It’s so good to see more institutes helping horses by educating horse owners on how to care for them. There is too much misinformation coming from feed companies and barns where sick, stalled horses are the norm, when all horses really need is natural feed, herd interaction, and correct hoof care.

“I’ve had a lovely experience with my ISNHCP trimmer. She takes her time with my horse and always explains what she’s seeing and why she’s doing something. I’ve learned a lot from her about management and diet, and the difference in my horse’s hooves has been amazing.”

Some Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous hoof care experience to enrol?

No previous hoof care experience is required although exposure to horses helps. The programme is designed to take you through the education and practical skills progressively, from the foundations of Natural Hoof Care through to hands-on practice.

How long does the training take to complete?

The complete training programme takes approximately 2.5 years. This includes online study, hands-on clinics, mentorships, and study cases, with breaks between different modules to give you time to develop and consolidate your practical skills.

How does the online and hands-on training work?

Your online study gives you the knowledge and principles behind what you will later put into practice. Hands-on clinics then allow you to develop those skills under direct instruction, with the programme structured so that your theoretical and practical learning support each other throughout your training.

What can I do once I complete the training?

Once qualified, you will be added to our practitioner list and will be able to work professionally as an ISNHCP Practitioner. Your education can also open opportunities beyond hoof care appointments, you can diversify depending on your area of interest, run consultations and other services related to natural horse care.
